That's a very old report and even a casual reader can see that its conclusions are not supported by the evidence it quotes.

Also Sutton Trust have a political angle on their work. They are trying to improve the educational lot of kids from non privileged backgrounds and wanting to increase social mobility. They have decided (wrongly in my opinion) that Grammar Schools are bad for their targeted groups and it would be better if everyone went to a comprehensive school.

But the interesting thing is that Grammar Schools do not come out negatively and the research is done by an institution catering for selective examinations for GS and many top public schools. It is still the only comprehensive study of the remaining 164 GS and 125,000 school children attending them.
