help with method please

Post by saimaj21 »

Help needed for BOND MATHS 4TH PAPER 11 QUESTION 41-43 please

A CASH BOX CONTAINS SOME COINS TO THE VALUE OF £5.25
THERE ARE TWICE AS MANY 5P COINS AS 2P COINS, AND TWICE AS MANY 2P COINS AS 1P COINS. HOW MANY 1P, 2P AND 5P COINS ARE THERE?

I would really appreciate help with the method for this ques as Ive been attempting it as a ratio 1:2:4 but no getting anywhere!
thanks

I guess the best way is to look at the "minimum unit" that the coins would make up ie 1* 1p, 2*2p and 4*5p = 25p. So how many 25p's are there is £5.25? = 21

So I reckon there are 21*1p, 42*2p and 84*5p..... if it is wrong my excuse is that it has been very busy at work and brain is going squidgy.

Thank you for your reply....i think your method is soooo appropriate for 11 yr olds! thanks alot for that-
there is another similar question though...
Scott has 1/3 as many computer games as Anish, and Anish has 1/2 as many games as Nick. Together they have 140 games how many do each have?

answer: 84, 42, 14

thanks, help much appreciated

Again it is finding a lowest common multiple of 3 and 2 and 1 eg 6.
So Nick has 6 games, Anish 3 games and Scott 1 game.
So 6+ 3 + 1 = 10.
So how many times does 10 go into 140? = 14
hence the answers are as given 1*14=14, 3*14=42 and 6*14 = 84
