Hilary Benn in the Guardian today

Post by katel »

Interesting article in today's Guardian wheren Hilary Benn tries (and fails) to square the circle of the existence of Grammar schools and the government's professed opposition to selective education. Does anyone know what what % of children are educated in LEAs with a selective system? Benn implies very few, but I thought that as Kent and Bucks are very large LEAs, the 5 is surprisingly high. Anybody know?

Hi according to this it is 19/150 LEAs - although some (like N Yorks) will only have selection in some areas.

Found this on the Grammar school associtation website [2006 figures]

"Although grammar schools only account for 5% of all state secondary schools, in these particular league tables, there were 86 grammar schools among the top-performing 100 secondary schools. Last year there were 82 grammars among the top 100, so grammar schools are improving their performance compared with other types of school."
