S Daughtrey Book 1 Type 2 Question - Help please

Post by borax »

Please could somebody explain to me why the answer to the following question is "head" and "glove"?:

Hat is to (head, sun, brim) as hand is to (fingers, glove, wrist)

To me, even "brim" and "fingers" would seem to be a better, if weird, answer!
The answer does not seem supported by her explanation of this question type in the preceding pages.

Sorry if I'm being dim, please give me an explanation I can pass on! Or is this question written incorrectly?
Thanks

I think it's like this. Hat goes with head and gloves go with hands.

I don't know whether there is any other way.

My son has done this one. He says, use basic logic rather than in-depth analysis!!! So head goes with hat and gloves go with hand. He also adds that brim is the outer rim of the hat and the outer rim of hand/gloves are the finger tips not the whole finger. Well that is the explanation given by my 10 year old. : ). I am sure somebody will come along and give you a reasonable explanation.

It would be easier if it was written Hat is to............as glove is to.

But the logic of the relationship holds true even if it is reversed, if you know what I mean.

Hat is to (head, sun, brim) as hand is to (fingers, glove, wrist)

Actually, I think this is a proof-reading error. You have to be able to write the same sentence with the two halves of the question. So:

You wear a hat on your head.
?You wear a hand on your glove.

This doesn't work; you can't reverse the logic.

At the outside of a hat you have a brim.
At the outside of a hand you have fingers.

This does work.
