Latin books

Post by Minesatea »

I am looking for a Latin book / workbook for my year 8 DS to practice his latin. He does well in grammar tests but is struggling to learn all the vocab. Any recommendations?

Lots of schools use the Cambridge Latin Course which does have other material apart from the textbook. The second link has games and online activities.

Your post prompted me to find out whether the books I used at school many years ago are still available, and I was surprised to find they are! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecce_Romani" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
All new editions, of course, but with the same characters and stories about the life and escapades of Cornelia, Flavia and Marcus, inter alia. :lol:

I seem to remember the basic vocab being listed at the end of each chapter and also in an alphabetical list at the end of the book.

If I was taking up Latin again now or investigating it for the children, I would probably use these.

Havent used any of these but I have heard the Cambidge Latin is good and also the Galore Park "So You Really Want to Learn Latin" which is geared towards common entrance but book 3 completes what's required for GCSE. Depending on what level your son is you could start on Book 2 and progress to Book 3. If you go for the Galore Park book, you will need to buy the answer books separately for the questions and exercises in the main book.

Have you tried "Languages online"? http://www.languagesonline.org.uk/

Thanks.

He uses the Ecce Romani at school and as you say they have the vocab in them - the problem is he is now on book 3 and so has had to hand books 1 and 2 back.

I can't decide whether to buy him his own copy of the ecce romani books or to try something else. Perhaps I should find out what DD's school uses?!

Thanks andyb I hadn't realised that site did Latin - he may be motivated to do those activities (computer geek!)

My daughter started Latin this year and struggled with vocab, I printed out some strips of paper with the Latin word on one half and the english on the other to make 'flash cards' then we used them to practice. It really helped her and she got an A in her recent exam :D
