VR Specialist Tutors - Bucks
Dear all,
As a frantic mum of 3 about to (July) move to Tylers Green with a Yr 5 girl, I desparately need some recommendations on VR tutors or courses over & above the online directories. I feel lost & at a huge disadvantage not being in-area prior to the new school year and therefore not benefiting from the wonder of the playground grapevine! Whilst we do VR work at home - I am so consoius of competing with those who are masters at it & been doing it calmly for months or years. Also, my daughter will be 10 yrs & 10 months so needs a higher score to pass - although how much I cannot work out.
Please help if you can. Thankyou!!

it is against the policy of the forum for people to post recommendations for tutors. However, there are a number of tutors who pay a small amount to advertise their services on the Tutors section of the Home Page. You can go directly to them here:

They are not approved or checked by the Forum, so please read the small print and the advice on how to choose a tutor in that section.

To work out standardisation (NOT my specialist subject, I hasten to add), look at this link:

It suggests that your daughter will need to score something around 93% to pass. However, before you panic, I must mention that folklore says that the children who do best at the 11+ are the very oldest (because they are older) and the very youngest, because they benefit from the standardisation process. Those in the middle of the year (Dec - Mar) are the most vulnerable, as they have neither benefit.

Thanks - & yes we do tutor her at home as stated. The problem with that is simple - we are not teachers - and for all the love in the world - we are not objective about our own child. I do not want to pay someone to sit with her on exam papers - I can do that for free! But - when it comes fine-tuning technique by question type - no book can replace a highly experienced human being exploring the right way to explain for the individual child & having the patience to repeat it.
Equally - buying the books doesn't give a clear idea of how graded the papers are - i.e. is it automatic that a higher issue or volume are more like the real level - ergo are the lower ones too basic to be used except for beginners? What is the optimum level to reach etc etc??

There are several instances on this forum of people who have tutored their own child very successfully - USA, for example, had no choice, as she is over the herring pond, and wanted her child to take the Bucks 11+. She is no more a teacher than you or I!
You sound slightly irritated that we cannot recommend a tutor. Even if we were allowed to, you would find that all the good tutors are fully booked by this stage.
If you continue to DIY you will find that Patricia's advice is very sound, as she is an 11+ coach herself, and you will get very quick answers to any issues or questions on the forum, as I hope we have proved today.
However, if you still want to find a tutor, there are small ads in the back of the Bucks newspapers that may help you, as well as the link I posted earlier to tutors on this website.

This is what I used. The IPS VR Tech and Method were fantastic. You have to get this. Next, go onto the IPS practice questions (green book) and then get the IPS 10x30 min papers. You are now well on your way.
Also, obtain (these are all from this site by the way) the NFER M/Cx4, and.Bright Sparks x 4. I also bought AFN papers -not as good, but great in the beginning as slightly easier. I did not have the time for The Tutors papers (but I know they are good), and dare I say it, but I also bought the tiger striped books, which I found pretty good. My son is about to sit his 13+ so I am trawling it all over again, but all I can say, is practise a little every day (morning is best), get Patricia's vocab list (brill) and be patient. It might not click immediately, but once that Technique bk was finished....we both knew what to do! Will write more later, re his scores etc, and a few tips re timing.
