Reading School 13+ exam Jan 2012

Post by Magnolia »

My son has surprised me by asking to take this exam and I want to help him, but don't really understand what he needs to know. He just missed the cut off at 11+.
He isn't happy at his new school for a variety of reasons.
I have looked at the school website and am not a lot clearer. Do I just look at the govt. syllabus for year 8 children and assume he needs to know everything on it as far as maths and science are concerned ?
I wondered if any body knew what the English paper contained ? Is there a composition? or solely comprehension ?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes I mean the Reading School exam for year 9 entry.Sorry for being unclear.
We had dropped the idea of going for it, until my son asked this holiday if he could have a try.

It is really the English that is worrying us at the moment, if it is a comprehension we are in for a choppy ride.
Which study books would anybody recommend to practice comprehension ?

Any help would be great.
Thank you

I would expect the English to be comprehension and writing, have a look at the Bond fifth and sixth books.

Steve,
Thanks for your speedy reply. I have got the one Bond book for 12+, and am looking for something else as although it contains 10 comprehension tests the rest of the questions are a bit strange.I really don't know about the comprehension I am guessing it must be 30 minutes ?
Read the Council thing with interest, thanks for that.

Thank you.

I found (well dd did!) the 'Bond' Secrets of comprehension book good. It is aimed at 11+ so the examples will not be at the right level, but I found it worked wonders for technique and actually helped my rather 'literal' DD to understand what 'they' were getting at, as opposed to what was being asked. Good luck :D
