"The second test will be of a more searching nature"

Post by Bemily »

So it says in the letter about test arrangements that I got from SHS. What do they mean do you think?

Ds1 took the test last year(just in year 7 at Pates)and he said the second paper was certainly not as straighforward as paper one.

He said it wasn't "harder"as such and nothing that he hadn't covered-it was just put in a different way.Maybe stuff that wasn't as "tutored?"
That's as much as he can remember!!

Oh and the first test was indeed similar to GL and the second more like Bright Sparks, possibly a bit tougher but not as hard as The Tutors paper 4(we did only a couple of these and thankfully he was prepared for them to be this tough!)

I agree with muminTewkes. The first test was "really easy" and the second he finished with about 5 mins to spare saying that it was a lot harder. He had however been soaked and had a change of clothes, and gained a plaster on his knee so he took a while to settle in to the second test.
I had warned him in advance that the people setting the test would try to do something that the tutors wouldnt have thought of an so to expect some trickier questions/layouts. If the second test is done with A-E answers then they need to keep a finger/pencil on the correct question so that they don't throw the whole thing out.
Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will think it is stupid.

That does tend to be the case. Untutored children tend to find the second paper similarly difficult to the first, possibly because, being untutored, they're unfamiliar with any questions and by the second paper have got into the swing of things. Tutored children tend to know the 'question types' presented in the first paper, so may become flummoxed when coming across unfamiliar questions in the second paper. It may not help if they're overly confident having been heavily tutored.

Of course, really bright ones can often sail through both papers with ease, irrespective of tutoring or lack thereof.
