Verbal reasoning question

Post by Franticdad »

Hello all hope you can help a rather perplexed dad my DS had the following question in his tuition I tried helping but for the life of me could not fathom it, the question is in two parts so here goes.

A man sells consecutively numbered tickets from a roll of tickets. The first number he sells is 0202 and the last ticket he sells is 0297. How many tickets does he sell?
Answer 98

If he sold 105 tickets what would have been the number of the penultimate ticket sold?
Answer 0303

The second part was straight forward knowing the answer to the first part, I tried subtracting 0202 from 0297 but this gave us 95, a shortfall of 3. If anybody knows the technique I'd be very grateful if you could show me.

thanks in apprecaition

Surely those answers are wrong?

I get 96 for the first one, which is the difference between 0297 and 0202 (95) plus the 0202 ticket that he's also sold.

I get 0305 for the second question. He sells 0202 and then has to add on a further 104 tickets (making the 105 in total). 0202 + 104 = 0306. But the question asks for the penultimate ticket, so this is 0305.

The answers provided would have been correct, if the ticket-seller started at 0200, instead of 0202. Has it been written down wrong?
