Preferences in Herts

Post by WP »

Herts will be carrying out the statutory annual consultation on admission arrangements in January and February of next year. The main proposed change for 2013/4 entry is to increase the number of preferences from 3 to 4. This would apply to primary as well as secondary admissions. See Item 4 of the Education & Skills Panel meeting. The map in Appendix 1 makes an elegant case.

Yippee! At last Herts wakes up and realises that with all surrounding boroughs having 6 choices their school places are being taken by those who can choose to apply to six schools not four. The number of Herts places at DAO reflects this. Why 4 and not 6 though? DG

I agree, anything less than 6 and children living in other LEAs will continue to be allowed an advantage. And 3 choices is too few when you are considering grammars.
I cannot understand why they want to stay behind the others.

Neighbouring local authorities have 3, 4 and 6 preferences, so I suppose they can say they went for something in the middle. The minutes also mention concern about an increase in the number of appeals.

With this change I expect the following numbers to go up!

These are allocations from Herts to other Bucks schools in 2011 (despite what people say it is possible to get into them from Herts :D )... bring on more choices!

Aylesbury Grammar School 10
Aylesbury High School 10
Chesham High School 40
Dr Challoner's Grammar School 2
Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School and Performing Arts 3
The Amersham School 2
The Royal Grammar School - Boarding 1

Interesting reading. Herts LEA should be concerned since they clearly know that the parents think that their children are being let down at the moment. Still it is only very reluctantly doing something about it - not sure this is very democratic. So if parents exercise more choice like in the densely populated nearby boroughs, the LEA should be happy for the children.

The results of the consultation are to be discussed at a county Education & Skills Cabinet Panel meeting next week. On the question of increasing the number of preferences from 3 to 4 from this year, 61% of respondents were in favour and 22% against. The officers recommend making the change.

Seems like a step in the right direction but West or South seems to be the way to move!
