percentile scores

Post by smartie »

If a child had be assessed as being on the 82nd percentile for performance skills and the 42nd for verbal skills, what sort of support should the school be giving or what can I do? Any help would be very much appreciated

Smartie

I did see your message in the appeal section saying your DD had just been diagnosed and I am pleased that you have at last got some answers.

With regards to support, after assessing your DD (for her diagnosis) it should be the EP, SALT & OT specialists who should be making recommendations for her future support.

I believe you have decided not to appeal, do you have a good back up school? Have you been to see the SENCO yet?

We do have a good back up school, however it's frustrating to think that if she'd had support earlier we might not be in this position. I thought she'd actually done really well all things considering :D She's very disappointed though, not good for her self esteem. I have spoken to the SENco and she actually mentioned appealing, but a low score etc.

The performance skills are for matrix reasoning and block design, I don't know if they hold any significance. These were roughly the same as when she was first assessed in year 3, though because of a change of SENco and Ed Psych things unfortunately weren't followed through as probarbly should have :( . Feel like giving up the fight but doesn't feel fair on her.

Sounds like your DD had a WISC IV - reports are usually broken down into Verbal Comprehnesion, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory and Processing Speed and if appropriate a overall IQ score will be given.

The block design & matric reasoning subtests come under the perceptual reasoning (just checked on DS's EP report).

Please don't give up the fight - for 4 years at Primary I knew there were issues with DS (socially & academically) and I know the school were aware of them but their hands were somewhat tied. DS was not underachieving and although the school would discuss DS with EP the local authority would never assessed, although I continued to push.

After years of not quite knowing what was different about DS he was finally diagnosed with Aspergers and we had a private EP assessment done, which was invaluable. He then went on to fail the 11+ dramically and as you probably already know we did win our appeal.

After the appeal I decided I would continue to fight and I decided to ask the local authority for a statutory assessment for DS with the ultimate goal of a statement. I was told by a number of professionals including HT, EP, OT & SALT that I would never get him a statement, however the HT did say she would support me in whatever way she could. The 'I would never get him a statement' was enough to inspire me to prove them all wrong - and I did.

It took a year and a bit of a fight with the LA but DS has now had a statement for nearly a year and I am so glad I stood my ground.

Thanks you so much for your words of encouragement. This has been going on since year 2 so I'm just fed up of it all. I know she's bright but she just doesn't perform as well as I think she could. How much did you DS miss by on the 11 plus? I think her teacher will think I'm mad saying I'm appealing so I haven't spoken to him yet. Just keep hearing about all the other 'clever' children that are appealing and have only missed by a few marks :x

Hi smartie

We were in a similar situation to MG, i think in the same year too, a DS with AS, failed 11+ but a bright child. Again we won two appeals and my personal feelings, with the benefit of hindsight and having had discussions with my DSs GS is that AS is one of those areas where it is recognised that a child has difficulties but can still be "GS material"

We were able very easily to link our DSs literacy problems to the EP's report, which i think helped. Probably the other way round, in that, we were very aware of his specific difficulties and had been since YR/1 and these were highlighted for us by the EP report in Y6. We then talked to the school and they were able to narrow down issues at school and we then used the EP's report to back up our points.

So what i'm really saying is have a look at the EP's report, (i can't look at mine to give an example as a friend is looking at it to get an idea of what you get if you pay for it!) when you break it all down it may back up AS problem areas both at home and at school. Another example i can think of is empathy/sympathy skills........ we knew his were very low because of his lack of response to people/hes a loner but this was really drawn out by the EP. At one appeal we were asked about the way his AS affects him, so we could explain and we had evidence for this.

Sorry to ramble on about my DS but i'm trying explain how i feel by really narrowing down the issues, not just saying DD/DS has AS, and providing evidence- both EP and school -to back this up it could help your case.

Ultimately your DD still needs to be able to keep up at a GS and you need, as i suspect has already been said, good strong academic evidence.

To answer your question we are in Bucks so pass mark is 121 DS got 104 & 106 - so well below the pass mark.

Academic evidence we submitted at appeal was

Year 5 CATS - VR 94th percentile NVR 94th percentile
Year 6 CATS - VR 94th percentile NVR 96th percentile

EP assessement Verbal Comprehension 95th percentile Perceptual Reasoning 92nd Percentile

My DD took the 11+ this year and she didn't qualify either and although her CATS NVR scores and Quantative Reasoning scores are similar to DS's her VR scores are not as strong. We haven't appealed as I know that she wouldn't cope with GS but I am sure she will do very well at our local upper school.

Thank you both for your replies, it's nice to talk to people who actually understand :D . Those scores are amazing and I definatley don't have that kind of evidence. But at the moment I really don't know which school would suit her best. She has high capabilities when she is able to have things in order and things to help with her sensory issues , such as soft clothes. She did really well in practise papers at home when everything was just the way she needed, but she couldn't have this way at school because I had nothing to show she needed it. I think with some children without 'issues' can do well in any school, but I'm not sure about my DD, her confidence had taken a nose dive, she really needs someone other than me to believe in her.
