Why so many Glos Grammar Schools ?

Post by icechip »

Having just watched "The History of Grammer Schools " on BBC4, I was wondering how come Gloucestershire managed to hold on to so many non independant GSs? Anyone like to give me a short history? It might take my mind off March the 1st !

A lot of it was down to whether the county was Conservative controlled or Labour. Wales has always been Labour hence all Grammars converted whereas places like Bucks kept theirs. I should imagine it is why there aren't any in the Forest as it is not your typically Conservative area. it always surprises me that it is at the moment. The Conservatives came back to power c 1978 and put an end to the closures.

I was from a Tory-controlled area, and they chopped our grammars (apart from one which turned private) in 1976. The County Council were not in favour of Grammars as I remember. Against the odds my school has retained its good reputation as a comp.
