106 My sons appeal (Berks.)

I am appealing for my son he acheived 106 in his 11 plus exam. NVR was 113 and VR was 106. Exact marks were 67/80 in VR and 58/70 in NVR. I wanted to know what the appeal pannel actually does, are they there to only asses his academic ability and whether he is suited to a grammar school? What evidence of my childs acadmic ability will the panel actually have, or do we bring all the evidence ourselves. Will it be that they acess the ability through the academic evidence we provide and the headteachers recomendation, or do they contact the school? I am a bit confused, i would be very grateful for a response.

Consortium appeals are not noted for their transparency, but if the appeal takes place before 1st March, I would have thought they will focus on academic ability/suitability for grammar school, and decide whether to offer a place at the school you're appealing for. It would also be worth mentioning why you want a place there.

After 1st March, if the school is or might be oversubscribed, you must give reasons for wanting a place.

It's for you to provide sufficient evidence - they will not contact the school.

Yes - unless there are original copies that you want returned, and you tell them.

Does anyone think that my child has a chance of getting a place. Total was 106. We have a good headteachers reference expressing her dissapointment at his failing, and is predicted level 5's. He does suffer from asthma and one week before he went to the doctor with an inflammed and very sore throat. Is a doctor note a good idea or does it seem like an excuse? There were issues at home with marriage seperation and subsequent financial issues. what do you think?

As I've already said: It's for you to provide sufficient evidence - they will not contact the school.

If you're sending in copies of school reports, letter of support from primary school, etc., you could take the originals with you to the hearing.

They probably won't want to check the originals, however. (They can usually tell from the format - and consistency - of the evidence whether or not it's genuine!)
