Help needed!

Post by pick350 »

What a day! Just came home to the worse news ever and now I'm totally confused. My son sat all the grammar school exams and passed Wilson's (reading comp, writing and maths) but was unsuccessful at the others not a surprise (verbal reasoning). We placed five Sutton school on the list and the final one was out of borough in Surrey (not a brilliant school). You've guess it, he got his 6th choice.

How do they work this madness out?
How did he not get three of the schools that are less than 2 miles away but ends up with a school 6 miles away?
Did they give him a school out of the borough because his score is too low or high?

LOW= not a chance of the waiting list, go somewhere else
HIGH = you've got a high score so let keep the school for some one else because you won't need it.

Spoke to Wilson's and a letter is in the post for us tomorrow. Any clarification would be great.

A confused Sutton mother

Hi and welcome

sorry to hear you have had a bad day with this.

Each school on you lost will say of your DS is eligible for a place - they won't have know where they were on your list. Just that they were on it. The LEA will give a place to your DS at the first school on the list who can give him one. For some reason none of the first 5 could offer him a place..

could you list the schools and we may be able to work out what has happened and if anything can be done about appeals - also his scores in the Wilson's test

Thank you. 367 children passed Wilson's and I'm curious to know how many from last year actually got a pass in the end.

1st Wilson's (pass)
2nd Sutton Boys (did not pass)
3rd Greenshaw (3.1 miles)
4th Overton (3.1 miles)
5th Glenthorne (1.6 miles walk)
6th Blenheim High School (4.2 miles train and bus)

Excluding the grammar schools, did you check what the distances were that the schools offered to in the last few years?

Were you within their catchment?

For Wilsons, how close was his score in relation to the score that they offered to? Do you have a position on the waiting list?

1st Wilson's (pass) just looking to see what the marks on the waiting list were last year
2nd Sutton Boys (did not pass)
3rd Greenshaw (3.1 miles) did he take the test here ? looks like 60 places are academic and the rest siblings or distance
4th Overton (3.1 miles) siblings and distance
5th Glenthorne (1.6 miles walk) can't find the most recent - seems to be performing arts for some places, and sibs then linked schools 60% and distance 40% or remaining places - is that correct?
6th Blenheim High School (4.2 miles train and bus)
I can see it must really frustrating having so many schools nearer but suspect that you have fallen outside distances on several of these . can be that if there are a lot of siblings then the distances become quite small. You can appeal to any of the schools on the basis of oversubscription - you will have to explain why the school you are appealing for is right for your child eg special interests etc.

If this is the case he doesn't qualify for any except for Overton.
Blenheim is in Epsom and Ewell. The website states:

The remaining places will be divided between the following Epsom and Ewell wards: Town, Ewell, Ewell Court, Stoneleigh, Auriol, Cuddington, Nonsuch, Stamford, Woodcote, College, Ruxley and the Sutton Worcester Park area (see map at school) based on a straight line from the main Pedestrian Gate at the school to the centre of the child’s main residence. Ward maps are available from Epsom and Ewell Borough Council. In the first instance, places would be allocated equally amongst the wards. If any ward/area had fewer applications than the number of places allocated, these places will be divided amongst the remaining wards/Worcester Park area. In the event the remaining places do not distribute evenly over all wards/Worcester Park area, then the places will be distributed singularly, starting with the ward nearest to the school and then working away from the school until all wards/area have an seven distribution of places.

If 389 children passed Wilson's last year. How many were give a place? How many were placed on the waiting list?

Thank you

Trouble is he wouldn't qualify for Overton if the cut off is less than 3.1 miles, I don't know the area well but it is possible in a built up area that a catchment wouldn't go out more than a mile or two - there may be some info about the previous distances in the LEA stuff.

Our local Mod is a bit busy at the moment so we will try and find some more info though it may take a bit longer..

2011, the 3rd, 4th & 5th choices had less than 2 km distance allocation.

1.6 to 3.1 miles looks like quite far away. Might have a shot at Overton, though.
Also see where on Wilson's wait list.

Well the letter is here and I'm going to sign up for the waiting list.

How many were successful on the waiting list and how far down the list did they reach?
What was the highest score and the lowest score for gaining an immediate place?

Grateful for any help :)

Thanks for that TB - I thought that the distances might be quite small - 2k is about 1.2 miles .. not much
