12+ (Sats Levels)

Post by crunchie »

Hi Everyone,

To take the 12+ in Buckinghamshire does anyone know whether a child requires a 5A or whether a level 5 A,B, or C is acceptable.

After a disappointing 11+ result we are predicted level 5 for English & Maths Sats so taking the 12+ may be an option for us.

Thank you

Just Level 5 - it can be A, B or C.

Officially there is just level 5 - the a, b and c are 'inventions' by splitting the mark spread into 3.

Does the Level 5 have to be achieved for the Year 6 SATs in both English and Maths before they leave primary school? Thanks.

There are no level descriptors for the sub-levels and they are generally described as follows:

c: just achieving the level
b: consistently/securely at that level
a: always at that level and possibly nudging into the next level up.

They are quite arbitrary and totally up to the teacher to decide how to apply.

The Year 6 papers are marked externally I believe. Do they come back with these sub-levels in the SATs scores or will it just be Level, 4, 5 or whatever?

hi - just to throw a spanner in the works - it is possible to sit the 12+ with a level 4 - they will refuse to allow you to sit test - then you can appeal against that refusal if supported by current head - i know of someone who did this as their dc had level 5 maths but level 4 english - they were convinced they were right to grammar school even though they did not pass 11+ and were not sucessful at appeal - they are now very happy at grammar school after having a boring year at local upper

Yes, you can 'appeal to test' which is easier than a qualification appeal but obviously something you could do without.

That said, I think level 5 is a reasonable criteria. You would have to be fairly convinced that there were some mitigating factors as to why your child did not achieve a level 5 in Y6 SATS to feel certain that you were doing the right thing by appealing to test and putting your child through the test process and possibly even qualifying.
