Anyone appealing?

Obviously we are all very appealing on the Trafford board

Am just finishing my AGGS appeal form and wondered if it was just me this year, it all seems so quiet here! I don't think we have a snowball's chance in ****, but feel like it has to be done, for completeness really My daughter is still quite sad about not getting in but has been talking pretty positively about joining the drama and music groups at her allocated school. Earliest appeals are at the end of May - I'd quite like to get it out of the way asap.

I've been a lurker but have been forced out of hiding with the appeal situation I find myself in. I'm finding it particularly painful as 27 years ago it was my mum appealing for me. I have horrid memories of my friends laughing (because they thought I was joking) when I told them I hadn't passed. I remember the unsettling appeal period and then the double disappointment of the appeal being unsuccessful.

Had her teacher been ambivalent and said she would be better placed in the top sets of her allocated school I really would just happilly accept the situation. However, he is adament she should be in Grammar School and would do really well. She is an all-rounder, one of his top performers etc etc..... To rub salt in the wounds SGS has a Visual Arts specialism and my daughter is on the Gifted and Talented for Arts (and Literacy). I can't not try can I? I do feel I am fighting a losing battle - at least a battle where the decision has already been made.

I would also like it to be out of the way but I am also dreading it. I have drafted my letter but am struggling to get the final copy done as it just makes it all seem too real.

I keep telling myself that this time next year it will have all worked out one way or another and it will all just be a bad memory..................until I get to go through it all again with my younger two!

You say that it's rubbing salt into the wound, but try to think of your daughter's G&T in art as yet one more concrete reason for them to give you a place! My primary don't even bother with G&T except for maths and english, so your already one step ahead of many parents.

It's hard when you know they'd be perfectly capable at grammar, isn't it? Is your daughter happy with her allocated school? What do you think of it? We're in Manchester and my daughter will go to Parrswood. It's just the kind of comp I went to and, though not ideal, I did very well and am (fairly ) well-adjusted and very happy. Our children may not have the type of education we hoped for, but hopefully they (and we) will learn new perpectives and find positives that we hadn't even considered before.

I've got two more to get through as well. Although I'm hoping our experience of the comp will be so successful that they'll refuse to pick up a single NVR practice paper! My eldest (already at AGGS) has gone from moaning about having sisters at school to moaning that she'll go through all by herself!

I may well take you up on that bitter rant, although I should probably warn you it may be a long one too!

We are very lucky. We live in Trafford and have been allocated an excellent school within an easy 15min walk. My daughter is fine with it, mainly because a lot of her friends from primary school are going there - although we expect there will be a girl there who bullied my daughter before she went on to a different primary...... We are therefore appealing for another excellent school within Trafford too!

I do know she will be fine wherever she ends up - I told her this many times during the run-up to exams (perhaps too much!) but as you say, it's hard when you know she would be well suited to a Grammar School education.

I expect a bitter rant might find it's way to your inbox in the next few days!!! In the meantime, I have appeal forms to fill in............

Just a quick update. DS friend had successful appeal for UGS. Missed by 3 marks and didn't get through original review as had 2 weak papers and one high score so was viewed as weak in 2 areas.
He then passed AGSB, Sale and Stretford which gave further evidence for appeal.
They received notification of 'uplifted' score from UGS during Easter Break then formal Trafford LEA allocation letter earlier this week.

Similar story: I know of two who, on second review by UGS, were deemed to have passed and then offered places this month.

That's great news for those who got in on second review

I can't tell you how much I regret ruling Urmston out in original plans. She would have made second review on her AGGS and SGS scores......... Still, it's a lesson learnt for my next 2 chidlren!!!!

Does anyone know of anyone who has been succesful with the late tests which were offered for Urmston?

Good luck everyone! From a newbie here and I am not asking for your personal reasons, but generally what reasons do people appeal on? Is it literally for people who are just one maybe 2 marks out/poorly-ness on day itself? That kind of thing. Can you appeal on the grounds that although your child didn't get a place, but passed, that you child deserves a place for reasons x, y and z?
