Popular instrument for Indian girl to play?

Post by ourmaminhavana »

I'd be grateful for any help from fellow forum members! I am researching a play and am trying to find out what instruments an Indian teenage girl might play, if indeed there are any for which there may be a particular inclination from a cultural view? It needs to be something she can carry, although I'd also be interested to know if piano is popular.

when I was in school (1/4 of a century earlier) the most popular instrument for Indian girls (in India) used to be a guitar, sitar or harmonium.

Don't know if that answers your question but hope it helps.

A sitar or a sintoor are most popular nowadays.

We are an Indian family and 10 year old daughter instruments are Piano and Voice. Regarding carrying an instrument, we have a Roland Stage piano (FP4) to move around the venues.

Shout for any further questions!

Thanks very much everyone. That's very helpful. I had thought of a sitar, but wondered if there were any less obviously Indian instruments for which there may be an inclination! The idea is my character is rejecting her culture.
