Sitting the 11+ at SHSB?
Does anyone know what happens when the children arrive? DS was asking questions about it and I'm not sure! Do they all go into the hall or are they put into groups and assigned a classroom? I presume they take a pencil case-pencils/rubber? Are they allowed a drink? Snack? Are they taken to the toilet between the first two papers or is it up to them to go and make sure they find their way back again? Little things, but the sort of things it might be nice to know in advance!
My neighbour told me a horror story of girls being sick on the drive and sobbing through the exam through nerves last year at Westcliff Girls school-is it really that bad!?
We asked these questions to the head of his junior school recently at the 11+ meeting but she didn't know any of the answers...

Hi Manana.
I have had two sons sit the exam at SHSB. It was very well organised. When you arrive and go through the front entrance there are lots of friendly, approachable sixth formers and staff on hand to tell you where to go. We were directed into the dining hall first where they both checked in. They were then taken to the toilet in small groups and brought back to the check in point. DS2 sat the exam in the main hall, I believe, and DS3 in one of the classrooms.
They were allowed to take a transparent pencil case into the exam but no drink or snack. They will be provided with that during the break. Both sons said they were also escorted to the toilet again.
There was a boy crying when DS2 sat the exam and I have heard reports of children being sick but have no experience of it myself. I warned mine that this may happen and told them to ignore whatever else went on and to concentrate on the exam. One other tip is to tell your DS not to take any notice of boys who are talking about how easy the exam was, during the break. It is just bravado but I didn't want it to worry my sons. Good luck!

Hi I am not sure about SHSB but one tip I would give is to view the school before the big day, ask where they sit the exams and make sure that the child goes and views these areas like the hall and the gym, talk to them about the possibility that this is where they will sit the exam. We did this with our DD last year and I think having been to the school a couple of times before the big day made her feel a little better on the day as her surroundings were familiar. My DS has taken his exam at SHSB last november. Even I was so apprehensive about how the whole day will pan out.
You have to go to school thru the main entrance, as you enter the main entrance, you will be guided to a huge hall where you see sixth formers and teachers next to allocated alphabetical order slots( A to G), H to M etc.. You go the area where your child's 1st letter of surname, someone will check ur child's name, surname, give a label with ID Number. Then they will guide the children through. The parents are not allowed beyond this point. They allocate classrooms for groups of children and very well organised.My DS didnt say anything like children being sick n all . I think when they r in small groups, the pressure is little less. My child got into WHSB, his first preference. The support I got from this forum is unimaginable. So if u need any help.. let me know.
