Wirral Grammar or Calday Grammar?

Post by dewalt »

Simple question I need to ask is which school would you send your Child to? My child has Passed and been offered a place in both schools but I really am torn between them, I accept that it is my choice but would like to gauge other peoples opinion. Thank you for listening

From what I know of these schools, there is literally a cigarette paper between the two. I think it comes down to where is geographically closest, or where school buses are most accessible.

I would base my choice on nearest distance and your own impressions. Which school did you and your child feel 'most at home' in. On open day, which teachers or speeches hit home with you?

Lovely dilemma to have, by the way. Well done to your DS. :D

The morale at Calday is at rock bottom right now. Also there are a lot more students there.

Sorry Bobbybrown
Not so
Morale is high at Calday
New head, Mt Rodaway is fab and very progressive-he made the year 10's and 11's revise in school time in the same room as other boys taking their exams so much in the way of revision was achieved-He thinks boys have too many distractions outside of school and want them to relax at home when working hard for exams-he's jalso ust sent home a survey for parents about school and home work. Communications ahve imprioved wit a new Coms site being set up and new prospectus on the way. Best of all for the boys ( my son is chuffed as are his friends) he's organised an end of term fun day for the boys with loads of physical activities for them to try. Expecting exam results to rise this year

On a more neutral note and to answer your question, Calday is great for sciences and languages, music and maths. Wirral Grammar mums will be able to tell you what's strong at their school. They differ from Wirral in the following ways -offer Russian, Chinese and Latin (important for Oxbridge)as well as French, Spanish and German languages with an option to take 2 to GCSE level (they invite parents to learn these languages as well in evening classes!). They offer International Baccalaureate in the 6th form, have girls in the 6th form (they partner WKGS), otherwise the school curriculum is similar although Wirral has a Business and Enterprise specialism. Both schools are sporty but most of this is optional. Calday has a slightly higher intake level 200 v 155 but this is generally never reached as not enough boys pass the 11+ and wirral generally fills up to it's level so the difference is not so great. I'm sure there is something similar at Wirral but Calday also has a good pastoral system with some boys being trainied as peer mentors and year 7's being assigned to 6th formers.I guess you have to go where your son's skills will be best developed.
Hope this helps

Sorry I should have clarified: staff morale. I have friends who work there. I'm pleased that this has not been picked up by the students though.
