Grammar School exam for Yr8/Yr9

Post by Apple »

My daughter is currenly studying in Yr 7. We just moved our house and would like to apply for the Grammar schools over Buckinghamshire. I don't think my daughter is good enough to take the exam now, should I let her practise for a year before applying? But by the time she may have to appy for Yr 8 or Yr 9. I am not sure is the examination for Yr 8 or Yr 9 similar as 11+?

If you want Y9 entry you will have to register before December 2007 - 13+ will then be in April - however places are VERY limited.

Where [roughly] have you moved and which school are you interested in? Read the 12+ threads for more info - 12+ and 13+ are the same.

Hi Apple

You are not too late to request that she sits the 12+ for entry into year 8 this September, provided you have moved into Bucks since January of this year.

Whichever year you go for, the process is the same. As Guest55 says, you must apply by December - the deadline for next year has yet to be published. The head then writes a report in support (one hopes!) of your request that your daughter be tested. Generally Bucks will allow a child to sit the test provided they have 2 or more Level 5 SATs. If they refuse to allow her to be tested you can "Appeal to Test", and generally such Appeals stand a good chance.

The test is in April, results come late May and then places are allocated in early June. The system changed a few years back and there are no places held open for successful 12+/13+ candidates - they get a place only if there is a vacancy (or if they stage a successful transfer appeal). There are usually far fewer places for 13+ candidates.

As Guest55 has said, it would be helpful if you can tell us which school/schools you are most interested in, because that will help us to tell you whether it is worth her sitting the exam in the first place.

There are a number of grammars with vacant places this year, so maybe you should give it a go this year anyway? You have nothing in particular to lose, provided your daughter takes a "win or lose, it doesn't matter" approach. We can advise you on practice materials even for a very short period of preparation.

You would need to ring Admissions to set up the test and be able to provide them with evidence of when you moved here.

Good luck

We just moved to Aylesbury in early May this year, we are targeted at Aylesbury High School or Sir Henry Flord. I think they are two really popular grammar schools in Aylesbury, may not get a good chance... :(

(I don't know why I try to input my user name as Apple but it kept rejecting me!)

Hi Apple

The reason the system rejected your name as Apple is because you were posting under that name without logging in. Guests cannot - for obvious reasons - use an existing registered user-name. Next time you log in, just check the box "Log me in automatically". (BTW, I will delete your duplicate post for you.)

I don't know for sure if there are places at either of those schools, but you could ring them and ask, or ring Admissions. Obviously places are being allocated to 12+ candidates at this very moment, so the situation is fluid.

Of the two schools my guess is that Aylesbury High is most likely to have places, as they were allocating places to children some way out of catchment last year. A friend whose daughter is hoping to go there will find out if they have a place in the next few days, and they are quite some distance from the school. I will post when I know what happens to them.

Guest55 - do you have any more information?

Sally-Anne,

Is there a document on the buckscc website that describes the 12+/13+ process in detail?

Cheers

Not really - it isn't the most obvious of names! I can think of at least 6 titles that would be easier to fathom ...

Hi,

Floyd is more likely to have places I think - but go round both and have a look. Which 'feels' right for your child?

New Head at the Floyd is very good - Performing Arts and Science specialism, AHS has languages specialism and a recent good OfSTED.

They are quite different - AHS is girls only and Floyd is mixed -
