Can someone please help me to work out this question. answer is 16. Thank you in advance

The volume of the box is 4cm x 2cm x 2cm = 16cm
The diagram is showing a piece of paper/card that has dimension of 8cm x 6cm of which they have shaded out/cut four squares each 2cm x 2cm, thereby giving the dimensions of the net left to make the open box which has the above dimensions.
