What do you take to Uni?

Post by Fran17 »

My DS1 is off to Uni in a few weeks time. We went shopping this afternoon to buy some of the things he needs. I will tell you what we have bought so far and would be very grateful if people could add the things we have missed out. This is all new to me.

Door stop - so other students feel they can pop in to say hello on their way to the kitchen.
Clothes dryer
Cutlery
Spatula
Pizza cutter
Cork screw and bottle opener
Baking trays
2 saucepans (small and medium)
scissors
Fish slice
2 quilt covers and pillow cases
2 pillows
1 quilt
Shower gel
Shampoo
Underarm deo
Hair gel
2 sets of towels
Filing trays

How are we doing? Can anyone suggest anything else?

Colander or sieve
Cheese grater
Measuring jug
Tea towels
Roasting tray (or is that a bit ambitious?)
Frying pan
Wok
Sandwich toaster (my most useful possession when I was a student!)?
A set of knives - or at least one chopping one & a bread knife
Nurofen
Paracetamol
Berrocca very important, I'm told
condoms

Sorry if some of these are on your list already, I can't see it as I'm typing! Will add as I remember things I've heard discussed by friends with DCs going off soon (there seem to be a lot of these conversations at the moment).

En-suite? Shower rack to stick up?
A mattress protector.
Make sure you know the size of bed before you buy bedding. We've had double, 3/4 and single to cater for!

See if DS can find out what the fresher events are as fancy dress will be needed!
The usual are Army, Hawaii, Roman, School / Geek, Jungle.

I think their theme is Dennis the Menace.

Toilet rolls
Do you need washing powder?
Drink to share is a great idea!
We got a big tin of Celebrations for DS to share.
Student cookery book
Telephone number of local Dominoes

First aid box - of sorts.
Yes to washing powder / tablets. Some universities operate a card system (register /pay online), others it is still coins.

I have no information....my daughter has told me nothing....except she needs a laptop which is true.

I had no idea there would be a fancy dress theme at freshers.

In halls do they still need all the kitchen equipment ? Just checked and hmmmmm I have a lot of reading/shopping to do.

My older son has just returned from uni after 3 years and managed with very little - he was self catered in the first year, and his house for the next two was very well kitted out.

Is procurement of contraception left to the individual at this stage and parental advice given? Tricky one but valid if parents are buying shower gel and stuff like that.
