Help with GL Assessment Pack 2 Test 5 Q 40,41, 43

Post by Sonia »

Hi,

Can some plz explain these:

Question 40
(19 [15] 12) (10 [6] 3)
(27 [?] 20)

The answer is 23.

The relation I am building are these
19-4=15
10-4= 6
27-4=23 Answer

or
12+3=15
3+3=6
20+3=23 Answer

Just confused as only one number either on the left or right is being used

Question 41

(4 [12] 36) (2 [6) 18)
(5 [?] 45)

Same like the above question
4x3=12
2x3=6
5x3= 15 Answer

or

36/3=12
18/3= 6
45/3=15 Answer

Again one number on the right or left is being used

Question 43
(3 [5] 16) (4 [10] 28)
(5 [?] 10)
Answer = 0

Cant find any solution for this question.

Also DD had never encountered these type of questions using only one of right or left number to find the middle number.

Explanations of these above questions will be highly appreciated,

Regards

1 add R and L numbers together

19 +12 = 31

subtract 1

31 -1 = 30

half it

30/2 =15

s0 27 +20 =47

47-1 = 46

46/2 =23

As per yoyo's answer.
Question 41

(4 [12] 36) (2 [6) 18)
(5 [?] 45)
Multiply 1st number by 3, subtract from third number, divide by 2. Answer = 15
Question 43
(3 [5] 16) (4 [10] 28)
(5 [?] 10)
Answer = 0
Multiply first number by two, subtract from 3rd number then divide by two.

You must always, always use both numbers outside the brackets in these questions.

Q41..multiply L*R answer in brackets is the

square root of that answer

4*36 = 144 sq root of 144 = 12

2*18 = 36 sq root of 36 =6

5*45 = 225 sq root of 225 = 15

Extremely thankful Yoyo & Sally Anne

Question 40 is involving three operations
19+12 =31
31-1 =30
30/2 =15

Question 43 is again involving three operations
5x2=10
10-10=0
0/2=0

Question 41 ( Thanks Yoyo) again for the explanation . Really helpful

Do the real tests have questions with three operations , because the tests we have done so far , except this pack are done by two operations.

Question 41 is interseting as all of the VR guide materials often state that no times or division in these questions will every be higher than the 12 x table but in fact we have 36 x 4, 18 x 2 and 5 x 45

Yes, 3 stage operations can and do appear in the real 11 plus as written by GL Assessment.

Walsh include some 3 stage operations.

Although most of the section will use relatively easy numbers, 36 x 4, 18 x 2 and 5 x 45 can appear towards the end of a section , together with 13 x 13. In addition knowledge of how divide large numbers is required.

Q41 can equally be done as R-6L (where R is the number to the right of the brackets and L is the one to the left)
36-(4x6)=12
18-(2x6)=6
45-(5x6)=15

No need for tables above 12

For question 41,

(4 [12] 36) (2 [6) 18)
(5 [?] 45)

can't you just use the fact that the 2nd number is 3 times the first and the 3rd is 3 times the second?

All the guidelines say you must use both sides
