Dr challoner desirable and Pinner Post code = no chance ??

Post by GAMJIS »

Hi

I am new to this forum and the 11+ exams. We have just returned back home after 5 years abroad ( yes timing sucks according to my son, and rightly so) and still trying to come to grips with various LA's, councils and different rules.

We live in Pinner, HA5 post code. Our desirable schools are Dr challoner, QE Boys and Watford grammar. My DS is considered a bright young man and the independent school he goes to says that he is good chance in all schools.

I need a reality check here. Is it at all possible for him to get ( assuming he gets the desired scores) Dr Chall ?? On their website it says distance of 11.8 miles.
I also realised that I was to have applied before 4 pm of 7th Sep . I applied 12.30 am 8/09/2012. Hoping that he will still get the chance to sit for the exam.

One more clarification please. What happens in case of the following scenario:

We give QE as first and Watford as second preference. We dont get the desired score at QE but Watford.
Do we get Watford grammer or are we refused admission as they were not our first preference.

Please anyone ?? Any advice

Life was so simple when my elder one went to secondary.

Hello, and welcome!

That was a most unusual year, and the distance was far wider than usual simply because they introduced new rules on residence requirements at quite short notice. In every other year you would need to live within around 6 miles from the school for your son to gain a place.

The address evidence rules for Dr Challoners ruled your son out long before that, I am afraid. You needed to be living here on 1st April 2012 in order to apply for a place at the school for September 2013. It is the only Bucks GS with such tight evidence requirements - all the rest have an address evidence deadline of mid-November 2012 this year.

If you still want your son to take the Bucks test despite your late application you will need to speak to the Bucks Admissions team about it, mentioning your recent return to this country.

Schools do not know the order of preference that you have placed them in. The allocation is made by the LA (Herts) and is done solely on the basis of the admissions criteria. Your order of preference is not considered. Please see here http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/school ... nce-system" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and read our "Schools" section for more information.

It might be worth looking at Chesham Grammar School as you would usually get a place there from Pinner. The results are good but it suffers due to its close proximity to Dr Challoners so often has surplus places for out of catchment candidates. The results are still very good.
