Spelling Tips!

Post by Pumpkin Pie »

Does anybody have any tips on SPELLINGS. My DD often fails to recognize spelling mistakes in questions, yet she is really good at learning her spellings for tests! Many thanks!

The only advice I would have is mnemonics though they are only useful when learning to spell a name, not sure about not seeing them when written down. Can she see then mistakes when she has written it herself or is it in spotting someone elses mistake she is struggling?
Does she read a lot?

She should team up with my ds - who can spot a spelling mistake in print at a hundred paces, yet seems to be totally unable to see them when he's written them himself (which he frequently does)!

Ah, for because, our school teaches: baby elephants can't always use spoons easily. Very cute.

I remind DS that it's the question words that have a wh in them, but he still persists in writing 'we whent to the park.'

Best advice I give my DC is to break words into syllables. That way they are more likely to work out the correct order of letters.

If they ask how something is spelled I always tell them a word within a word if there is one.
E.g. Business is bus then in then e double s.
