kent 11+

Post by judlouise »

my daughter got 130 verbal reasoning, 116 (3marks short) non verbal reasoning and 111 (8marks short) for maths - she had her heart set on Invicta and was expected to perform better. I was always assured she would be fine at 11+ by all her teachers. Unfortunately we could not afford a tutor (son has myriad special needs and we are paying for him to attend a private school with specialist learning support) but i did buy some 11= study books and practise papers which she did most days of her summer holidays - I am wondering what to do next and would like some advice as to whether or not it would be worth appealing - Her grandfather died at beginning september this year and his funeral was 23rd sept and i know this affected her deeply - can this be used as an extenuating circumstance as feel she might have done better if she had not been grieving - she has always had excellent school reports, has been made house captain this year and has always been described as a pleasure to teach - she is one of life's hard workers and I still feel grammar school would be her best chance - please help - a desperate and sad mum

The best thing to do is read through the appeals Q & A's and give yourself time to decide on the best way forward. http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeals" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i have been reading the advised for most of the day plus have worked my way through all 18 pages of the real stories of appeals and am now bamboozled with jargon, evidence and the appeals process - probably best to sleep on the vast amount of information i have taken in but just wanted an honest gut reaction to whether an appeal would be worth it based on being 11 points short - my most pressing question as well is how to fill in the SCAF - do i still list grammar schools especially Invicta as my 4 top choices or is that just a waste of time - my worry is that if i put the local school in my choices then they will just discount the grammar schools because she didn't pass and only count the local school - please help answer this one

As a rule of thumb, the further away from the score required, the harder it's likely to be.

Appeals are unpredictable, however, and no one can say what your chances would be.

It depends what sort of evidence you can present. This would need to focus on academic ability in particular:

If the school is full after the allocations, or might become oversubscribed as a result of appeals, then it would be critical not to overlook reasons for wanting a place:
http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeal ... -school#c2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Usually the grammar school would have to be on the CAF because you can only appeal if you have applied and been refused.
Alternatively it ought to be possible to do a late change of preference (and then be refused):
http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeals/general#a26" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- but this might raise doubts at appeal about how committed you are to wanting a place at the school.

Sorry to hear about your results.

You need to put the grammars on the CAF in the order that you want them, if you don't you can't appeal to them until much later. If, for example, you were to put Invicta first and then local comp 2nd you would automatically get refused Invicta as she did not pass and local comp then becomes your first choice, which if you fit all criteria you should then get.
