5370 passed but only 4575 places??

Post by Essex2Kent »

I may have failed my 11+ back in the 80s but even I can see that sum doesn't work.

The pass number will go up with appeals but what happens? Those on 360 loose out or those farthest away?

Thanks

New here but been lurking for a while.

Remember that not all those who passed will take up a place. We are OOC and I know for a fact that many taking the test just used it as a free practice for tests for private schools. And those with low passes probably won't send their children on long school journeys.

Well done to all those who get their choices and to those who don't, I really empathize.

Just to add in, I know of at least 5 children in our indy school that took more than one test

3 took Dover and Kent

2 took Dover, Kent and Bexley

all will only take one place so that takes 7 places off that total just from one school where about 25 took grammar tests, even so I can see where the argument goes that those living in that test area should be allocated first

Where did those statistics come from OP, and what were they in previous years?

Some will be OOC passes, and they only really affect the places available if the scores are above about 410.
Some Kent passers will also have taken other tests such as the Medway and Bexley tests.
Others will go to St Olaves etc.
And there will be quite a high number going down the Indy route.

Nevertheless, there will inevitably be oversubscribed GSs in West Kent and undersubscribed in East Kent.

Edit. 1288 passes this year were OOC.

All the numbers are very similar to last year.

a pass doesn't necessarily mean a grammar place, especially in the west of Kent, where teh schools allocate places acccording to highest scores, the so-called 'superselectives'

If all the numbers are pretty similar to last year there's not too much of a panic then? Although of course it's not comfortable being in the waiting list / oversubscription appeal category.

There is a huge difference between West and East Kent partly because a Kent wide pass mark is given, of course, but due to the nature of the super selectives in West Kent it raises the pass mark as people are trying to get in and work hard to get those scores. I was told by someone that went for an appeal that Harvey Grammar Boys in Folkestone had approx 75 places available after 1st March with approx 65 appeals and so according to those figures there were spaces in Sept?? and yet you read the forums and in the Dartford area 12 girls didn't get in even though they were in the catchment area.
