Kent GS selection 2012 - Restarted

Post by Ernestdad »

Hope to reopen "Kent GS selection 2012" discussion.

Sudhacm based on having a "likely" from St Olaves which is a SS and has not locality in selection I don't believe you have to worry and with a max score on Kent as well, there is no need to move. My understanding on St Olaves is that 850 sat test for 112 places, top 120 scores received a "likely" and next 50 scores a "possibly" and next 680 an 'unlikely'. You are in a great position.

Previous post:

I am increasingly confused and concerned about reported scores achieved for Kent's 11+, if speculation is right :

*882 children out of 11451 scored > or = 420 and 662 children scored 423 in 2012.
*589 children scored 420 in 2011.

This is quite a remarkable increase of 49.7% and would mean to get children into SS grammar this year would need a 420. To try and get this confirmed I have submitted a freedom of information request to KCC yesterday.

Kent Admissions

Could I formally make a freedom of information request to supply the number of children from inside Kent county and outside who scored the following eleven + scores of 414, 415, 416, 417, 418, 419 and 420 in 2011 and 414, 415, 416, 417, 418, 419, 420, 421, 422 and 423 in 2012.

I received the following reply today:

Thank you for your email below, which was originally received by kent.admissions@kent.gov.uk on 5th November 2012. Because you have requested information falling under the scope of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) your request has been forwarded to me to co-ordinate on behalf of the Council. This is to comply with the procedures that the County Council has for dealing with all FOIA requests.

Assuming KCC holds this information, we will endeavour to supply the data to you as soon as possible but no later than 3rd December 2012 (20 working days from date of receipt).

We will advise you as soon as possible if we do not hold this information or if there are exemptions to be considered and/or any costs for providing the information. Please quote our reference - FOI/**/**** - in any communication regarding this particular request.

As soon as I get the reply I will post it and should answer a few questions.

They second tranche got "possibly offered a place" not "probably". I am nit picking but there is quite a difference between "possibly" and "probably".

Thanks, have corrected post to be accurate.

With my DS receiving an 'unlikely' a 'possible' would have been a relief, especially as St Olaves would have been so handy as 0.5 miles away and DS would have been able to walk to school without having to cross any major roads. Know for next time to tutor DS for Kent test and St Olaves as very different.

Previous relevent posts:

Scores required to get DD's and DS's into SS Grammars.

The Judd - 417(min score for 2012 entry compared to 415 for 2011 entry).
Skinners - 414 (min score for 2012 entry compared to 407 for 2011 entry).
Tonbridge GS inners - 413, and outers 414 (min score for 2012 entry compared to 410 and 411 for 2011 entry).
Dartford Boys Grammar School 414 (min score for 2012 entry compared to 411 for 2011 entry).
Dartford Girls Grammar School 411 (min score for 2012 entry compared to 408 for 2011 entry).

There are three main reasons for the increase: the intensive coaching culture in West Kent (especially from the private schools chasing grammar school places) is seeing more children in West Kent passing and also gaining high scores; more children from outside Kent crossing the boundary this year and the economic climate seeing a fall in admissions to several private schools, putting more pressure on grammar schools.

Hi

Thanks for starting the thread again.

This is slightly different to the information I received from Skinners who told me that they took down to 414 on 1st March but they were able to make offers from the waiting list down to 411, but not all of those with 411.

It is a tiny glimmer of hope on my horizon, well my son's really who is desperate to go there :(

As SS's will not provide a definite answer relying on FOI requests and data from parents from this forum who have been through appeal process.

Hope your DS gets Skinners, as I hope a 418 will get my DS into Judd as this will mean he will be going with his best friend who achieved a 423. If it does not quite go to plan backups are Dartford, Beths and Wilmington, which are all impressive and came across very well on open days.

Completely agree that there is a coaching culture, particularly here in West Kent, but I would argue that it is most certainly not confined to the private sector, in fact I don't know anybody who hasn't coached their child in some way whether they are at an indie or a state primary.

It will be very interesting to see the figures KCC provide in response to your FOI request.
