Herschel Grammar School Admission?

Post by Sonia »

Hi All,

Just a quick question.

My friends daughter got 114 in the slough consortium papers and she put Herschel as a first choice what are her chances of getting her first choice on the allocation day.

Regards

Hershel admissions says

3. Where the number of pupils who have achieved the required standard in the tests by gaining an overall score of 111 or more exceeds the number of places available, places will be allocated according to the following oversubscription criteria in this order of priority:

(i) Looked After Children who have reached the required standard;

(ii) pupils with special educational needs (where written evidence is supplied from a recognised authority specialising in the particular needs of the pupil) who have or in the view of Governors should have reached the required standard;

(iii) the next 70 pupils in rank order of performance in the tests;

(iv) Children of permanent members of the school staff who have been continuously employed by the school for a period of not less than 2 years prior to the closing date for applications. If this happens during the normal admission round, the number of places available to other applicants will be reduced accordingly;

(v) proximity to the school. Distance will be measured in a straight line from the front door of the child’s home address (including flats) to the main entrance gate of the school, using Slough’s Geographical Information System (GIS), with those closer to the school receiving the higher priority.

so the nearer in a straight line you live to the school then you may be in the distance criteria of approx 40 - 50 children that only have to achieve the 111 standard.

Slough school admissions guide give some (confusing) info on page 21 about distance cut-off.

Is it 7.5 miles for Herchel? Looking at some of the posts for last year, I had the impression that the distance cut-off would be quite smaller.

Just a silly question .

The cut off of 118 score is for the top 70 students or its inclusive of the catchment area rules.

Or If a child living next door to herschel with 111 score will get admission or not? (just an example)

Regards

The 118 was the first offer cut off (from forum posts) for rank order.
From the information given by Slough Council (see the link above) the rank order went down to 115 and the final distance offers was 111+ out to 7.5 miles (I thought it would be less too 'tiffin boys')
