What is your year 4 child doing in school maths?
I'm feeling like the pace is slow at school. Can you give me some idea what your year 4 children are doing at school, and to your knowledge, if you have had a child do the Kent 11plus before now, whether this is going to get them the right sort of curriculum coverage by the end of year 5 or whether year 5 is going to become desperate "gap filling" at home.

I'm not in Kent, but my DS has been doing equivalent fractions in school this week.
Seize the day ... before it seizes you.

Really obvious ones like 3/5 = 5/10, or something a bit harder like 7/8 = ??/24 for example?
Don't think mine has done any work with any sort of fraction all term.

This week my year 4 has done;
Simple fractions 1/4, 1/8s and so on, adding fractions and understanding what the numerator and denominator mean.
Understanding < and > and using them in equations
Smallest number that added to a 4 digit number will move all the numbers into the next bracket - eg 1236 you need to 764 to it to make all the digits different. (Hope that makes sense!)
That is all he can remember this week!
(I would say that he is above average in numeracy but not G&T, he is about a 4c on a good day!)

I don't remember much of what DD did in year 4 except chunking. Mainly because of her legendary rant about it at the time.

The Year 4 blocks are here:

some pupils may be working on Year 5 objjectives.

DD in year 4 has done the following in order.
vertical addition,
vertical subtraction,
Multiplication ie double digit * single digit. 17 * 9 (haven't done double digit * double digit.)
Division - short division method/ chunking method including remainders
2D shapes
symmetry
coordinates
they also have a multiplication grid to do everyweek.
(not in kent btw)

None of you have made me feel any better!

Aren't you told what they'll be studying during the term?

Sorry, only just got back to EPE and now DS is in bed so can't ask him how complicated the equivalent fractions were. He did tell me that, today, they did mixed numbers: calculating how to make them into improper fractions and then back again into mixed numbers.
