Waiting lists/Appeals

Post by countrymum »

Firstly good luck everyone for allocations, mostly I've been very calm and pragmatic about it all. But as I look down and see where my four leaf clover is well  the nerves have set in a bit!

Anyway quick question, if one goes on the waiting list for a school, would it make sense to lodge appeals at the same school? Do people generally go on a waiting list, wait, then perhaps get an appeal in by the closing date for lodging an appeal, or just sit on the wait list hoping they get a place and don't have to appeal? I suppose it may depend on how much that place is wanted at that particular school.

you can appeal at the same time as being on the waiting list ... often worth a multi pronged attack and preparing for the appeal at least makes you feelas though you are doing something rather than wondering if it is OK to keep ringing to see if the waiting list has moved...

Also you need to bear in mind that if you do not appeal, other people may be successful at appeal and reduce your chances of getting a place via the waiting list. Most admission authorities like appeals for Y7 entry to be lodged fairly early so they can plan accordingly so delaying submitting an appeal runs the risk of it not being heard with the rest.

I might just be a bit naive, but on what grounds could you appeal, if it's just the case that your child has passed 11+, but the catchment didn't come out far enough to cover your address?

Thanks Alex, yes that makes sense too, I was of the thinking that the two may go hand in hand but of course perhaps not everyone on a wait list appeals?

Bromleymum ~ Valid point and I guess I think that too. Advice I have been given from my LEA and the schools admissions, is if she is not allocated any of the GS she passed and knowing all our personal things like catchment/criteria, I should email lea/school for her to go on the wait list. I was wondering if I should realistically be appealing too to give her a 'proper' chance if that makes sense. But yes, I need to get my appeal head on and think in more depth about over subscription appeals.

I know I can find reason/s why she needs to be admitted and i'm not going to let something like catchment get in the way. Practically one we are ooc for is actually one of the most practical schools for her to get to. What will be will be, and after this long and arduous journey I just feel I don't want to take a 'no' lying down, and even if just for closure want to give her the best shot at a GS education ( Even though I don't whole heartedly believe in it and yes am a hypocrite, but when is your child, sometimes ones beliefs and principles go out of the window)

PS Can you tell I'm thinking ahead even before allocations have come out at my lea

Hi Countrymum,

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it. Good luck for tomorrow.

Regarding waitings lists/appeals - we are oob and the school we would like DS to go to, has come out as far as us for the last 3 years (but not the 2 years prior to that). However, last year I know we wouldn't have been offered place on allocation day, but would have got a place from the waiting list.

I would love DS to go to gs, but apart from this fact, I don't know that I can otherwise justify him getting a place. There are so many bright kids that deserve a gs place. To be frank, if we were completely happy with local comp. I don't think we have bothered to do this. DD is at a local girls comp, which we are extremely happy with. May be I could persuade my DS to grow his hair and wear a skirt! :)

Hi bromleymum1 - just wondering what is wrong with the local comp. I thought most Bromley schools had a good reputation.

Hi cherryvalley,

The reputation of our local comp. is good, but results are pretty average. Last year's figures were that 63% of children got 5 GCSES including English and Maths. Also, expected progress, particularly in maths is much higher at grammar schools, important to us as DS is very strong on maths.

Have we made the right choice, only time will tell.
