11+ or 13+ which is better (N.London/ Herts independents)

Post by elevenlevel »

We are thinking about what to do - whether to move to a prep to 13 or a state primary that goes to 11 only plus tutoring.

What should we consider, assuming all other things are equal (which obviously they aren't). Are schools like Haberdasher's and Highgate still sticking with 13+ entry or reducing it in future?

Are our chances lower/ higher at 13 with Common Entrance or 11?

What schools are you targeting? There are lots of secret deals for places at 13 so the preps can keep their students beyond Y6. DG

Maybe Habs and Highgate. Possibly your very own DAO if we did the 11+.
I've read about that somewhere - the deals with the the unofficial feeder preps.

We know a student at Aldwickbury which is a prep feeder into St Albans and Habs. They told me that there is a gentlemens agreement between the two schools that St Albans and Habs will both guarantee their boys places at 13 so Aldwickbury can stop them leaving at end of Y6. Another friend at Radlett prep said they had the same deal with Habs. They even have their own exclusive open days. DG

Personally, i think its a question of how mature your DS is emotionaly and academically. Some boys mature academically by 10/11 and are able to make the transfer. there also some boys who need the extra couple of years at the prep school before they sit the 13+.
Moreover, a number of the schools now have the 13+ pretest which takes place at 10/11years so you need to decide and register if you have the 13+ in mind.
