North Cestrian Grammar

Post by bns »

does anybody know about this school
a close friend has a child in yr 8 at a local comp , she feels he is not reaching his potential , although he is of avarage ability , is finding concentrating and focusing at school difficult, and consequently underpreforming in her opinion.
I have been on their web-site ,results seem to be in keeping with a high preforming comp, does anyone have any experience of this school? any negatives can be PM'ed if you prefer !

It's a small independent that has a good Inclusive policy. Children sit an exam but there is no pass mark, if a child underperforms they are invited to interview.

It's very supportive of children with dyslexia and it's smaller class sizes enable children to catch up in areas they may have missed.

I have taught and tutored a number of children who have gone to the school and they are all happy, settled and thriving. Not all children can pass for the local grammar schools but many parents want the benefits that independents can offer.

I have a nephew at North Cestrian and I have heard nothing but praise from both parent and child. At primary school he struggled with concentration, lacked self esteem and in exams always under achieved. Now at this school, he is happy, confident, high achieving and loving every minute and a complete turn around from Year 6. The school has specialist teachers for Dyslexia etc but not all the pupils have or need this help, I think the small class sizes have been huge help in his case (no hiding in the corner when he didn't understand something!!) Financially it has been a struggle but, his parents are absolutely 100% certain they chose the right school. If you have any questions - I can ask for you.

thanks for the replies so far.
I think some context may be helpful, the the child in question is extremely polite, sensitive and somewhat insecure,he finds solice in friendships with girls and it is it very sad that other boys have made comments about his possible sexuality , tentamount to bulling (IMO), his mums main concern is that although NCGS is co-ed are we right in thinking it is still predominately a boys' school ??, could this make matters worse for him??
also how strong is the leadership , discipline and pastural care, apart from these concerns we both feel the school should be a good fit for him plus fees seem very reasonable compare to the the more selective Indies (which would not be suitable for him anyway)
Mum is arranging a interview with the Head as we speak, but would like potential questions ready before she goes!

My nephew has friends in other years (boys and girls) and they all seem to mix freely between year groups (and are encouraged to do so) compared to the schools my children go to. Overall, there are fewer girls than boys but the numbers vary in each year. I often pick up my nephew from the school and I see lots of girls in NCGS uniform so I don't think your friend should worry too much. He has told me that in his year, (7) there are 2 classes. One is mixed and the other is all boys, assuming this happens in other years, your friend could request that their son is placed a mixed class.

My nephew is very happy at this school and had his fair share of problems at primary school. Tell your friends to speak to the head about pastoral care, I'm sure he'd be able to reassure them about any concerns they have. I do hope they find the right school for their son, it's upsetting when your child is unhappy.
