Ideas for maths book prize

Post by agapanthus »

Does anyone have any suggestions about a book to buy for a school maths prize for a year 8 student? They do not really want a maths book but feel something vaguely related would be appropriate. Is there any maths related fiction out there? It needs to be less than £10.

Maybe look at some Rob Eastaway books?

Not the ones for mum and dad though.

Rubik cube?

Lots of science ideas from Bright Minds (I looked in 7-10 year old age group)

sorry, you asked for books.

The Phantom Tolbooth:
There’s no sneakier way to tap into a kid’s curiosity about math than with The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster. This classic children’s novel takes readers on a mythical journey of Milo and his “watchdog,” Tock. The book touches on a variety of mathematic topics — from infinity to three-dimensional shapes. Bonus: there’s an equal emphasis on language, including idioms and puns. It’s bound to be a homerun for any young reader. Oh, and 2011 is the 50th anniversary of this classic. Thanks for suggestions. Liked the look of the Phantom Tollbooth as it's not too laden with obvious maths plus the wordplay is probably more DD's cup of tea than numbers. Personally I thought Alex's Adventure's in Numberland was brilliant but DD couldn't see the appeal.
