VR - CGP Practice test paper 3

Post by amandee »

Practice test paper 3
qtn 12 & 14

12. NH is to NT, as NI is to _ _
ans is NS

14. XW is to DC, as ZY is to _ _
ans is FE

Please can you assist as we have been over these twice, and on both occasions our letters did not match what's stated on the answer sheet.

thanks in advance

This is just counting on and wrapping round to the start of the alphabet:

Code: Select all

WXYZABCDEF
.X.....D..
W.....C...
...Z.....F
..Y.....E.
X+6 = D
W+6=C

Z+6 =F
Y+6 = E

No 12 is counting in towards the middle.

This would only work on a multiple choice answer sheet as really could be several answers!

thanks for the replies, Okanagan and secondtime

I get question 14 now, but still not quite there with q12.

Understand that the first letter remains unchanged i.e. N

But in terms of the second letter 'H' to 'T' which amounts to +12, therefore 'I'+12 = U.

However, the answer sheet states NS as the correct option !!!

what is going on here please ...?

Presumably this is multiple choice? What are the other possible answers it is giving you? Sometimes with multiple choice it's a case of working out what it can't be from the options given, rather than trying to work it out yourself and seeing if one of those is amongst the options. On a standard format test, NU would probably be the logical answer to give. But if it isn't amongst the options for this one you need to find another pattern which one of the answers does match.

yes, but after elimination the two possible are NS and NU. The correct answer is NU, but the answer sheet states NS.

the possible choices are:

ns
nu
ou
os
mn

12. NH is to NT, as NI is to _ _
ans is NS

NH -> backward 6 spaces - NT forward 6 spaces
NI -> backward 5 spaces - NS forward 5 spaces

Hope that clears that one up.

I think amandee is right.
I think the answer is NU. I don't understand how it can be NS.

It is NS because it is following the same pattern as NH is to NT [6 spaces backwards and 6 forwards from N] but with 5 spaces as the denominator for NI - NS;

HIJKLM N OPQRST

IJKLM N OPQRS

That could explain the answer. But given that NS was also one of the options, and there is an equally valid, and probably more likely to be derived first by most people, explanation which gives NS, then it isn't a good question.
