Does anyone know how far out north Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar offered places last admissions.

We live just north of Sevenoaks, and I think I heard a rumour that places were only offered as far as south Sevenoaks.

Rather than rely on hearsay I suggest you phone the school office and check. I'm sure they know exactly how far their catchment zone extended and they should be willing to tell you. Have they had their open days/evening yet? If not, that would be another good time to find out. You won't be the only one asking!

We live just north of Sevenoaks and our son passed his 11+ last year. He wasn't offered a grammar school place even though we put TWGSB down and it is our catchment area school. We appealed and he was offered a place and started there last month.

I understand that there were several boys in this position in the Kemsing/Otford/Dunton Green area. My impression is that the appeals process was used to sort this out. Some places had become available through boys not taking up places and there is some shuffling around. Class sizes were increased slightly and my son tells me there are 31 in his class. This may or may not be true.

It has happened before to our area, for some years it has been girls who had to appeal for Weald, in others it has been boys and TWGSB. In the last 7 years, to my knowledge there hasn't been anyone from the village school who hasn't been offered a grammar school place in the end if they'd passed. Some who just missed out have also been offered places. That doesn't guarantee it but I think there's a sort of moral pressure on the system to offer grammar school places if a selective exam is used. As our primary school head said at the appeal, "What's the point?" otherwise.

Thank you for your reply kentishman.

That is pretty much what I thought, we seem to be at a disadvantage living this side of Sevenoaks as we are so far away from the Grammar schools.
