Each book covers a section of the maths curriculum so you will need them all plus the answer book. We found them very useful especially when having to go over parts of maths my son struggled with as there are basic examples which then become more complex and then after each example there are questions.

Does one cover basic algebra? Because school hasn't!

Yes there is. Just looked at books, book 1 covers decimals, fractions and percentages, 2 factors, proportion, linear measurement, approximation and standard form, perimeter, area and volume, 3 algebra, 4 averages, sets, other base, angles, distance and speed and 5 matrices, vectors, simultaneous and quadratic equations, trigonometry, mean, mode, median circles. Clearly you won't have to cover all of these subjects as some are ks3 sibjects.

So much of what is required for 11+ tests has not been covered by the school yet. With tests brought forward to as early as 1st week in Sept, it is us who have had to introduce and develop a lot us strategies (eg. algebra). I suppose what needs to be done has to be done.

I think it's bizarre and unfair to penalise state school applicants anyway by testing topics they haven't done yet, but moving the exam date forward surely makes it even more unfair. How many independent school students who are taught at least one year ahead, and kick out any disruptive kids, will take the GS places now?

I could understand if it was looking for general intelligence or wide interests, but if you don't know a letter could represent a number, after spending the first ten years of your life having the difference between them dinned into you, you are unlikely to guess, in my opinion. Or maybe it's just me and DD.

Because the most able candidates will get full marks and they need to differentiate?

The new Bucks 11+ will only test on Year 5 content so that is fairer.
