Car insurance!
Anyone any advice? We are looking at putting DS on our insurance for a very small car. I know there are deals with a curfew or a black box, but can't find a cheap one. Does anyone have experience of this? DS will be just 17 and on a provisional licence.
So far the quotes I've seen have turned me green.

We went with iKube from the moment he got his provisional. Pros are the insurance in his name from day one (so he builds his own no claims), they guarantee the premium not to increase when he passes and from a parental point of view the curfew between 11pm and 5am gave us peace of mind. Cons - cost
Have been with them 3 years now and curfew lifted after first year. Premium on a 04 plate VW is £1700 pa.

I think moneysavingexpert.com has a section on this.

Re: Car insurance!
Try googling marmalade insurance. It is a separate policy in their own name and renewable monthly. If they have an accident it doesn't come off your no claims.

Re: Car insurance!
I was going to suggest Marmalade too, prices start from £85 per month..................and also one called Collingwood Learners.
We didn't use them ourselves as DD1, now 18, couldn't drive my car as it's automatic and DHs is a long wheel base Landrover that now needs a bus licence to drive it .............but many of her friends used these companies as they insure you weekly or monthly........especially useful if you don't want to buy annual insurance.
One friend has a black box with Cooperative Insurance I believe.
DD1 therefore had lots of lessons, but unfortunately no extra driving practice.
She passed her test at 17 and we bought her an ancient Ka for her 18th. She was quoted £2400 to insure it had we bought it when she was 17, but as soon as she was 18, the insurance dropped to £1070..........bit of a difference.........that's why we waited!
Happy searching!

Re: Car insurance!
Adrian Flux is a specialist broker that can search for the best 'short term' policy from a selection.Just been quoted £205 for 3 months for DD when she turns 17 soon. Better than the £1, 900 to go on my policy (!) and it's also in her name.

Excellent thread, thanks.
Just marking my place to find it more easily next year

Re: Car insurance!
We used marmalade - if they have an accident it doesn't affect your insurance.
Re: Car insurance!
We used insurelearnerdriver (same principle as marmalade or collingwood) until our dd passed her test.
We then moved to Admiral Bell with a box and a multi car policy. It was by far the cheapest for us at the time, although each of our friends came up with a different package for their DC/age/experience and car combination!
As far as I could tell admiral/elephant etc. (there were actually 4 of them that were clearly the same company really) were giving me a cheap quote on the basis that I would pay the entire annual premium upfront not on a monthly direct debit. If my dd has an accident in that first year in her citroen C1 (cheapest insurance group) then admiral will most likely say it is a writeoff and that's the end of her insurance. Start again with a new car. Any quote requiring monthly payments was hugely higher though.
However, what I did like about Admiral at the time was that their multicar policy reduced the cost for my DD even further, right from the outset, yet it didn't require myself or my husband to cancel our existing policies: we just have to move to Admiral at renewal (at a price guaranteed when we took out the policy for DD) and stay with them until the end of DD's first year. So in our case, DD took hers in Feb, DH moved this month and I won't move mine until Nov. Come Feb, we can look around again. Effectively we got DDs first year for about £1700 AND the pro-rata price for myself and DH was actually cheaper than the policies we already had!
You do need to hunt around and the multicar policies don't show up on the comparison sites so require a phonecall or two.
Each company that uses a box has different rules too. Ours 'rates' the driver on a weekly basis looking at speed, acceleration, braking and times. There isn't a curfew as such, but if you drive in the evening it will reduce your rating. There is no increase/reduction in this year's premium whatever the box rating. The theory is that we may get a reduction next year if she is a top 25% driver. She still tries to beat the box, but I don't need to worry about additional costs on this the most expensive year of insurance.
Good luck!
