Any advice from anyone regarding arranging contents insurance for DS at halls in Uni?
Re: Contents Insurance
Make sure you go with a specialist policy that covers the communal living situation and clarify if theft from an unlocked room is covered.
There is a longstanding student insurance company that you can find on line. Check if DC received any discount vouchers at freshers fair.
Also check policy details for individual items like laptops and musical instruments when being used away from the room.
Would also think through when you would actually make a claim. Apart from the excess there is the issue of having to declare the claim on renewal - possibly including for the family home.

some hall fees include insurance - worth checking if this is the case.
Re: Contents Insurance
My nephew had to make a claim after an incident at Uni last year. He was with the well know student insurer and it was dealt with quickly and efficiently and everything that went was covered.

When I phoned my household insurance company to enquire about this for my daughter I was told that it was already included in our policy.
May be worth checking that your ordinary policy doesn't have this somewhere in the small print too.

Our household insurance with the NFU also includes all belongings for members of our household when living away from home and enrolled at a educational establishment.
Brilliant cover - phone stolen out of DD's bag, one phone call and told to replace immediately. The phone shop offered an upgrade to iphone 5, which the NFU also OKed over the phone. Sorted in less than 5 mins.

Even if your home insurance covers students away from home its worth checking the consequences of claiming - on future premiums and when you have to declare the claim(s) when taking out any new policies.
It could be better in the long run for them to have their own policy - although if they return to live at home they could bring their claims history with them anyway
Not an insurance expert! just points that worth considering.

My DS has insurance included in Hall fees; it is quite common.

Do check with the specific policy but a number of the insurance policies that are included in Hall fees only cover contents when they are in the Hall. So laptops etc are not covered when you take them to lectures unless you pay an extra premium.

Am quite surprised how few use the old pen and ink to take notes these days
