How does one know if your child is grammar school material?

Science, Literacy and Numeracy grades all assessed as level 3 at Key Stage 1 SATs might be a good early indicator? I believe they are the national assessment tests taken at the end of Year 2 (age 7). Your school should tell you the results.

I was told by one particularly pro-11+ junior teacher that children should leave year 6 with level 4's, however if they are into decent level 5's they are deemed suitable for selection for grammar.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi there Guest.
Here in Lancashire we are told that Level 5 at year 5 is a good rule of thumb. However there are very few Grammar schools in Lancs and Hundreds of children competing for the few places there are!

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Guest

If you son has started year 5 you should start thinking about tuition now.
The sooner the better so you are not cramming towards the end.

My daughter is in Year 6 and her headteacher and form teacher are expecting her to be at Level 6 for her SAT's - hope so!

Mumster - I'm afraid you've been misinformed - there is no level 6 in year 6 SATS. You can ask the school for the marks your daughter gets in her SATS so you can find out how well she did - but the highest grade she can get is a 5.
