Bexley Grammar School - any current parents' views?

Post by Filitosa96 »

We really like BGS, very nearly sent our son there (in the end he preferred DGS and that has turned out to be right for him) and are fortunate to be able to send our daughter there if we want, as she got a Top 180 place. So we have looked around it four or five times in the past five years

I would like to hear a parent perspective on it though, especially as both Mr Handscomb and Mr Welsh are leaving in the next six months. I am sure it will change very little, but I was really sad to hear they are going.

Any views? What do you like best/least about BGS? I love its warmth and laid back atmosphere and the languages specialism is the particular curriculum draw, along with what looks like fantastic music provision. I find it pretty baffling to navigate though - and it seems quite a big place, although I know that applies to most Bexley secondaries.

Our daughter is an August child and young for her year, she has some anxiety issues :( , so I'd particularly like to hear from anyone whose own child has had contact with the pastoral team.
How did your child settle in to Y7?

Any thoughts much appreciated, thanks

Hi Filitosa96! DS is in yr 9 at BGS, he loves the school as he always has. We too are upset about the forthcoming departures, I know that the students will really miss Mr Welsh, he has been an inspirational headmaster.

I don't think you need to worry too much about the size of the school - it can be daunting at first but after about a week they seem to get used to it. The teachers (apparently) do not worry if they're a bit late for lessons in the first couple of weeks. The other grammars in Bexley are just as large (I think, certainly in student number).

We also love the languages (so does DS!), and he's involved in a lot of the musical performances.

On the pastoral side, we have found the school very approachable and fair, and we have had our concerns resolved swiftly. (Not that there have been many!)

Our DD will hopefully be going there too next year, so we might bump into you!
