KES meeting

Post by Thegodfather »

I can't go. Can anybody let me know if anything of interest happens especially about the IB. (I know its great so I don't need details about performing arts block or new science labs- but I just want to know if the plan is to stick with IB or offer A'levels too).

Ta.

Hi, I was at a meeting at KES just before half term (DS1 about to choose GCSE options :shock: ) and the plan is definitely to stick with IB. It was discussed with respect to Russell Group/Ivy League/Euro universities and I strongly doubt they would ever revert back to A levels.

Fantastic evening, just got back. I would say tonight was aimed more at the children than adults. Mr Claughton came across really welcoming and was quite funny. I wouldn't say I learned any more about the school but it was a lovely refresher. After, there was an opportunity to go into the hall and talk to teachers and other parents and children. It felt a bit daunting but chatted to a few friendly people. Thegodfather, apparently yes the IB is the way forward for the school. Hope that helps. X

Did anyone else go? What did you think of it?

We were there! Very relaxed. The feeling I took was that learning was fun - it felt more informal and jokey than anything I've been to at any of the Birmingham/Walsall consortium grammar schools. Like they didn't take themselves too seriously. I wonder if the lack of Ofsted/National Curriculum pressure was in evidence. There was a very sweet and funny video of Year 8 (Remove as they call them) boys talking about their first year at the school.

Thought that video was brilliant! A great way of getting a glimpse of what the boys will get to experience. Think their ethos is 'Work hard - play hard' lol. Love it! X

Glad meeting went well - have been having a chuckle this morning reading this http://www.robertdarlaston.co.uk/KingEdwardsSchool.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
His successor, Canon R.G. Lunt, was an Old Etonian, who was to remain in office for 22 years until his retirement. Lunt was not generally popular, either with staff or pupils – he would not have seen popularity as any part of his function. He was widely viewed as an unrepentant snob; he was autocratic in an era of rising democracy; and he embraced earnestly the classics and arts, while showing less obvious interest in the developing world of science.......

.....Amongst other routine topics, Lunt would touch on a wide range of subjects in his customary superior manner, as when he made a passing topical reference to the newly launched Russian Sputnik, dismissed as a “hunk of Soviet ironmongery”...

.. One of Lunt’s more endearing eccentricities was his attachment to a Rolls Royce motor car, dating from the 1920s. He doubtless felt that it was the only make of car appropriate to one of his standing. He always drove it to school, perhaps a half mile by road, despite having a private path about 200 yards long from his house to the school.
Canon Lunt was still head when I started at KEHS :shock: - am glad to say it seemed much had changed by then but certainly the girls' school was rather more relaxed than this article implies the boys' was - there was very little connection between the two schools until Robson Fisher arrived - things change a bit then. Until then they had separate boys and girls buses travelling one behind the other from Acock's Green and Handsworth.

Hmm. I'm not sure about the IB! DS really likes a particular area and I'm sure he will want to specialise at post 16. I know you can apply to GS for post 16 but if you have given up a place there at 11+ for private it would make for a stressful time I'm sure. A friend had told me that the meeting last night would cover IB and I would come out thinking it would be great. Obviously I couldn't go so I still worry! What do you guys think? DS is a good all rounder...
