The nth term

Post by hasmum »

Hi,

I downloaded some 11plus maths papers from a website and it stated are suitable for 11plus CEM exams. (we are Bucks)
One of the qs we came acrsoss was the "nth term and next in sequence" it took a bit of working out before we got the hang of it, prior to looking at the answer.

Question
Graham creates a sequence with the nth term 3n2+1
What are the first two terms in the sequence.
A) 1,3 B) 4,13 C) 7,13 D) 10,37 E) 4,7

I haven't come across this in the other maths books we have been working on...has anyone come across this for the 11 plus....or what is likelihood of this topic coming up for Bucks CEM exam?

It certainly comes up in our area (North London) but perhaps not in yours. It is the type of thing CEM is made for;problem solving on the fly rather than knowing how to do it. DG

I seem to remeber my children doing this at primary school (Bucks), so assume it is part of the national curriculum (Guest55 will know), and they still do it now at GS. I have no memory of ever doing it at school and tell my children it didn't exist in my day :D

It's definitely covered in KS2 Level5 syllabus. Couple of SAT past papers reflected few nth term questions.

They start number sequence in year4 itself and find the missing number using patterns, jumps, leaps and multiples of any number. So, it's a certain yes type problem and highly likely to asked. Also new curriculum will be up and running in coming September and many schools are already doing smoother transitions in all subjects.

Thanks,
Crusoe.

I don't remember if it came up in the actual exam but my daughter definitely covered the nth term in preparation for the maths paper.

What year was that in, Tinkers? 5 or 6?
