Re: Time available for Creative writing in exams
I hope that parents of children who took tests in 2013 can give the requested information. I think some one mentioned before that it was about 30 to 40 minutes. May be if Ladymuck is reading this thread, she could help here.

Many thanks Ladymuck...

Either way, it's a good idea to get your son/daughter to practice planning and writing a piece in each of the four/five genres. Give them a time limit of 30 minutes at first, and see if you can get this down to 20. Producing one piece every (other) day might seem onerous, but it's probably necessary if you want to see real progress.

Yes, the genres are report writing (either non-chronological or chronological), personal recount (narrative), descriptive writing, persuasive/argument, and one other that still escapes me.
Practice, both timed and 'free', in all types is essential, together with constructive feedback for improvement.
PS: don't confuse genre (type or style of writing) with format, which could be letter, article, essay, etc.

No, I wouldn't bother with the job description, obituary, or advert, as they are far too specialised. The schools just prefer to focus on general types which can give all students a chance to show what they can do.
Writing based on a given passage is common though, and as I alluded to above, is likely to be some sort of narrative or personal recount, in one of the the formats that you stated, e.g. a diary entry, letter, or similar.
Plenty of practice of the basic genres in a range of formats should make sure the pupil is well prepared!
