Fraction question

Post by rejim2 »

Hello all,
Please can you help me with this question and the method. Thank you.

I have a cake. One friend takes 2/7 of the cake and another takes 1/4. The third friend takes 1/3 of what is left. What fraction am I left with?

The answer we worked out was 61/84. Please verify my answer. Thanks again!

2/7 + 1/4 = 8/28 + 7/28 = 15/28 eaten

so the third person eats 1/3 of what is left (1 - 15/28 =13/28) so 2/3 is left i.e. 2/3 x 13/28 = 26/84 = 13/42

The question is not worded well as I've assumed the '1/4' is of the original.

Thank you guest55. Yes, I do agree that the question is not very well worded.

DS worked out as 2/7 taken, so 5/7 was left over. Then out of the remaining 3/7 again 1/4 was taken which leaves a left over of 3/28. Again 1/3 of the remaining 3/28 was taken which leaves a left over of 61/84.

But as you explained, that could be the right answer. Many Thanks!
