Silver Award Duke of Edinburgh - am i too pushy?

Post by Minesh »

Lazy DS at it again - 'no point doing Silver as 18 months charity work' and 'won't be in time for UCAS form' and no friends doing it

Can anyone shed some light on this (i know i can contact school etc) but just a summary of wise more experienced parents, tutors or teachers would be more worthwhile.

Also posted previously has nothing on PS except football so i encouraged ought to do but 'no can do mentality'

Thanks as ever :(

don't think these things are a deal breaker on PS, what they want is academic achievements and an interest in the subject they are applying to read.

I don't think D of E silver gets many UCAS 'brownie points' these days.

Helping with a club at school or even football coaching might be better.

What sort of degree couse is he looking at?

DS is strong in mechanics, FM and physics - so pre sumably in that direction but lazy and no ambition

So is he aiming for engineering or maths or ...

Has he started looking at universities at all to see grade requirements?

This website is a good starting point with students who have no idea of what to do. It's not perfect but it is free:

In my experience, choose your battles and this one isn't worth it.
Much more important to think about uni subject and get involved with related extra curricular eg. Engineering competitions, physics olympiad etc.

A bit of football coaching or position of responsibility in the team/club will be fine for UCAS if its well presented.

If he's really interested in football how about the young refs course. I understand a couple of DS's friends have done it, think they may even get a bit of pocket money if they officiate but not sure if I've dreamed that last bit.

Doodles, they get remarkably well paid! Mind you, being a ref is tough.

Thank you for your replies

Guest 55 - No, No and No - there you have the flavour of DS

Some useful advice - may well leave DOE and try to encourage DS to pursue something akin to course/subjects - I don't want to do it - I may well ask school to help
