Advice for English prep....: year 5

Morning my son is in year 5. We are looking to get him to take Qe exam and watford boys exam next year. His maths is pretty strong but we are having real issues with the English side of things at the moment. He is a bright boy but a little lazy and rushes through work to be able to do what he wants to do....which means careless mistakes etc. I have been lurking on this site for a while now and reading through comments about how other parents have prepared there children for these exams. I just wanted some advice in relation to the best way to go about things.... He has had a tutor for over a year on a Saturday afternoon for an hour.... He provides him with homework for the week also. I don't want to put too much pressure but at the same time want him to be able to achieve the best that he can!!!! Would be really grateful for some advice please.... Thanks

Focus on grammar, reading (n discussion), try comprehension. We did DIY for qe so can say..it works.
