Halloween pumpkin carving - tips?
I've done this a couple of times: broken several knives,nearly lost a couple of fingers and it's always looked like a mess. Can anyone recommend tools, techniques for carving etc. to make it a safer, more artistic occupation?

We bought a pumpkin carving knife years ago at a petting farm type place near here. Very cheap & very effective. Cut out patterns from the Internet or draw them yourself. I don't really "do" Hallowe'en but we do always have a bit of fun carving pumpkins in half term.

We bought an inexpensive little kit in Waitrose a couple of years ago, complete with tiny saws, stencils and scoopy things. There's no pic with this that I can see, but the prices was around the same: http://www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductVie ... arving+kit" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You'll need a sharpie to trace the outline onto the pumpkin.
Don't do it until the day before or so because the innards go mouldy and soft rapidly.

This one is relatively easy if carved through.

I did buy a kit like that last year from Sainsburys but the blade bent and broke in a second! Is the one from Waitrose more robust? What is a sharpie?
Might do google now for pumpkin carving knife and see what I come up with....

Oh my! They are amazing! Love the ET one! I've just seen people on youtube drilling into their pumpkins. I realized what a 'country art' it was, and perhaps not just an American one.
Also found an extraordinary pumpkin carving knife set for 21 quid! Is this going to be my new hobby?!
