School Bus from Witham to CRGS

Post by Nikkibeak »

Hi does anyones DS or DD get a school bus on the Witham to Colchester route? We visted CRGS today and my son prefers it over kegs but is scared of the school bus. I've managed to talk him round a bit but noticed the traffic is very heavy outside the school so I wondered what time it leaves Witham in the morning and what time it gets back. Also any DCs experiences over whether it's fine or scary, where they catch it after school. If there's plenty of time to get to the bus stop after lessons if they need to stop off at the loo or their locker on the way. Anything I can use to set his mind at rest and get him to choose the school he prefers over the easy option where I can drop him off!

DD, aged 16, describes the bus as noisy because the year 7 are busy chatting, etc.

The noise will probably increase 10 fold with my DS on there

Getting the bus probably seems daunting atm but it's not a massive journey and most children seem to enjoy the time with friends.
If its a school contract then they pick up from the back gate ( supervised by staff) or on Lexden Road very close to school.
I,m sure he,ll soon get into a routine of when to go to the loo etc and not miss the bus. There is usually about 10 mins between end of school and contract buses leaving
When they have games at the field they finish early so as to be back at school for buses and to begin with they get escorted back and forth :)
There are quite a few after school activities including musical and sporting as I,m sure there are at KEGS so having flexible travel plans is helpful.
Csse web site has links to contract buses but I believe they go through Witham around 7.45am.

My DS is in Year 7 at CRGS and although he doesn't take the bus, is surrounded by people who travel far and wide. One of his class mates does two buses and changes on the train ! They all seem fine, I think my DS is quietly jealous of the bus "banter" and the freindships formed on the buses. I watched 4 year 7's tear out of choir last night to catch the normal bus to the station, very confidently and obvioulsy all looking out for each other.

My DS loves CRGS, best decision we ever made.. handy that, as we moved house for it :?

My DS is in year 11 at CRGS and has travelled by bus since he started. He takes the 525 and while there have been some issues with First buses because the bus broke down a few times last year, this has been more of an annoyance to me than him. He really looks forward to taking the bus and the friends he made in year 7 have remained a constant through all the reshuffles which happen to form groups at CRGS.

If CRGS is the right school for your DS the bus journey should most definitely not be a mind changer.

We have had the most fantastic experience at this school and are now having to apply to the sixth form. Earlier this week we sat in the hall and were reminded by Mr Jenkinson of just how well the school does, not just in terms of exam results but the kinds of boys they form there. We have absolutely no regrets. Like you, we felt CRGS was just better for our son than KEGS would have been and I am so glad we followed our gut instincts.

Good luck. If your son is fortunate enough to gain a place at this lovely school the bus will be a much loved part of his day.

Thanks everyone :D I'm sure he'll be fine. Maybe he'll even find a bus buddy who will remind him occasionally not to leave all his belongings behind on the bus

At the moment I collect him from school and have to frisk him to make sure he has his waterbottle, lunch bag, jumper, coat, homework and book and that's when he's in the one classroom day. I'm dreading all of the lost/left on the bus bags, PE kit, blazers and books next year!

He won't be alone!
Referring to lost equipment rather than the bus, but the comment applies equally to the bus.

Sometimes I feel like attaching things to him on a piece of elastic like olden day mittens

There was a new starter in Year 7 who successfully lost his entire uniform and went home in his rugby kit.
