the question is

jane spent a quarter of her pocket money on a book, saved half of it and spent the rest on sweets. if she spent £1.25 on sweets how much did she have at first?

the answer is £5
but how

We know that Jane spent a quarter on a book, saved half and spent the rest (ie another quarter) on sweets

if the sweets were £1.25 and that is a quarter of the total then the total must be £1.25 * 4 = £5.00
